PCL supports the use of Mass Timber to help reduce the carbon footprint of the buildings we build.
BENEFITS OF MASS TIMBER
01
Accelerated project delivery
Mass timber offers many construction efficiencies, including schedule acceleration, reduction in construction traffic and fewer workers on-site.

Accelerated project delivery
01
Wood is a renewable and sustainable resource. It naturally sequesters carbon and wood products require significantly less embodied energy than concrete and steel to manufacture and install.
CARBON AND
WASTE REDUCTION
02
Mass timber construction allows for the manufacture of prefabricated sections off-site. The advantages include shortened project timelines, improved safety, reduced site congestion, decreased waste and mitigation against high-risk weather.
A SOLUTION FOR CONSTRAINED SITES
03
Mass timber’s high strength-to-weight ratio when compared to concrete or steel provides significant design efficiencies and allows for smaller foundations and lower forces for seismic resistance.
STRUCTURAL EFFICIENCIES
04
Humans are drawn to natural elements such as wood. The warmth and quality of exposed timber has a positive impact on our well-being and reduces the need for additional finishes, further reducing waste and embodied carbon.
ENHANCED AESTHETICS

Wood innovation and design centre
At the time of construction, the award-winning Wood Innovation and Design Centre (WDIC) was the tallest contemporary wood building in North America. The structural concept used in WIDC is a “dry construction” design, virtually eliminating the use of concrete above grade except at the roof level. This concept allows for the wood structure to be exposed as the final ceiling finish. Dry systems help with the end-of-life story of the project, as the building can be disassembled at the end of its functional life and the wood products reused.

This three-story, 23,000-square-foot building has been designed to and will target LEED® Platinum v4 standards.
It will serve as a beacon on campus that shines a light on the university’s commitment to environmental stewardship. The primary structure will be constructed entirely with mass timber, consisting of cross laminated timber floor panels, roof panels and shear walls.

PRECONSTRUCTION SERVICES
Involving PCL early in preplanning allows us to help determine the most effective erection sequence, considerations for early trade coordination and opportunities to maximize prefabrication to help realize schedule and cost savings.
Our seasoned workforce has the capability to self-perform mass timber erection in many jurisdictions. In markets where mass timber is not frequently used, mass timber erection is often overpriced owing to unfamiliarity with the product. Our experience, historical productivities and ownership of the unique tools and equipment required allow for more competitive pricing.
We take a comprehensive approach to pricing mass timber projects and understand where complementary cost savings can be achieved. Confidently accounting for smaller foundations, reduced ceiling finishes and shorter construction durations at the early stages of design allows mass timber to be cost-competitive when compared to with other structure types.
PREFABRICATION AND MODULAR MANUFACTURING
Our in-house expertise allows us to help reduce a project’s critical path and improve speed to market through prefabrication and modular manufacturing while enhancing quality, productivity and efficiency.
Our proven expertise allows us to anticipate and proactively address construction considerations that are unique to mass timber. We develop creative and innovative solutions that allow your project to be delivered on time and on budget.
